Effective Engineering Teaching

The Section Workshop on Effective Engineering Teaching (SWEET) will be held in conjunction with the ASEE Illinois/Indiana Section Conference at Trine University. This four-hour workshop will take place the afternoon before the conference, and it will address best practices in engineering education, including:

* Writing objectives

* The important role of learning objectives

* Teaching and learning styles

* Developing rapport with students

* Motivating students

* Working with teams of students

* Active learning in the classroom

 

The workshop will focus on introducing best practices that have been validated by rigorous pedagogical research. It will be beneficial to faculty at all stages in their career, but new faculty are likely to benefit the most.

 

Enrollment will be limited to the first 25 people to register. The registration fee will be $25, which will cover refreshments and course materials.

 

The workshop will be presented by Doug Tougaw, Richardson Professor of Engineering at Valparaiso University. Professor Tougaw has 16 years of experience as an engineering professor, having taught more than 30 different courses ranging from the first year to graduate school.
